4 Things Dancers Need for Their Social Media
Whether you’re "gramming" your latest double-shot mocha frappé at Starbucks or uploading a video of your son blowing out birthday candles, social media is used to share all of our big (and not so big) moments with our friends, family, and maybe even the rest of the world. While some of our accounts may not be as popular as Ariana Grande or LeBron James, we all do share one commonality: we all start at zero. Social media can be used for selfies, but it can also be used as a vital tool to promote yourself, share ideas, and attract potential gigs.
So how do you take your pages from zero to social hero?
1. Get A Demo
A demo reel is a quality video sample of yourself performing several different styles of dance. If you plan on being a successful dancer, you’re going to need a demo reel. And there’s no better way to strut your stuff then posting clips of yourself dancing on all of your accounts. Potential agents and companies want to see your style, your choreography, professionalism, and taste. You’re marketing yourself here, so keep it sharp, strong, short and sweet. Make sure you stand out and only showcase your best moves.

2. Take A Professional Headshot
We say "don't judge a book by its cover," but let’s face it, we all do. And no one is going to judge you more than a prospective dance company or talent agent seeking to hire your for a video or tour. The bathroom mirror selfie just isn’t going to cut it. Take the time to research legitimate photographers who will get your good side! Then, post it front and center on all of your pages!
Don’t underestimate the power of an excellent headshot. Put your trust in a professional company and let them take the perfect photo for you.

3. Don’t Be Invisible
So you’ve got the demo and headshot posted prominently on all of your platforms. Now it’s time to start building your audience. The only way to do that is to post and post often! You don’t have to do it everyday, but find a schedule that works for you and stick to it.
Steven Charles of Mac Talent Agency in Detroit, Michigan notes that “casting directors make their final decisions after a brief review of a dancer's first six posts on Instagram.” This emphasizes the importance of a strong media presence. Social media was built for making connections, not marketing. Build relationships with as many like-minded individuals as you can by making posts, sharing other dancer's demos, following, liking, and joining dance oriented groups online.
4. Keep Dancing!
Running a successful social media profile can sometimes be overwhelming, so it’s important to know your limits and take breaks when necessary. Get back to the basics: vibe out to your favorite track and do what you love. Dance!
Dancers can use social media to promote themselves, build a brand, and share their message with the world. A strong online profile will make you stand out from the crowd and may help you land your dream job of going on tour or being in the next big music video.
Make your presence known by running social media pages that are a step above the rest!
